How to Set Up a Manufacturing Plant in Jamaica

Choose a legal structure, decide on a business name, and officially register your company in Jamaica before beginning operations. This can be done at the Companies Office of Jamaica. 

Once a suitable site has been found, purchase or lease the land or building from public or private sources. There are contract manufacturing services offered in many industries; a good place to start is the Scientific Research Council. The JMEA also provides information for private contract manufacturers.

Hire a contractor and begin building or refurbishing your manufacturing site once approvals are granted.

To legally operate, the plant must be registered as a factory and meet health, safety, and welfare requirements. For certain industries such as food, pharmaceuticals, etc., the Ministry of Health and the Bureau of Standards Jamaica will conduct checks for safety standards. If the facility will contain a laboratory, Jamaica National Agency for Accreditation (JANAAC) should provide accreditation once tested.

Enroll in Jamaica’s Productive Inputs Relief Scheme or similar programs to benefit from available tax breaks for manufacturers. Contact the Ministry of Industry Investment and Commerce (MIIC) for more information.

Set up your business for local tax compliance and employee statutory contributions by registering with the Tax Administration of Jamaica and the National Insurance Scheme.

Finalize all staffing, regulatory, and logistical arrangements to ensure you’re ready to begin operations.

With all requirements completed, you can officially launch your production and start manufacturing.
