Protecting Your Intellectual Property (IP) as an Exporting Business
Protecting your intellectual property is key to safeguarding your brand, inventions, and creative work.
Here’s how to get started:
Determine the Type of IP
Identify what you need to protect:
- Trademarks – Brand names, logos, slogans
- Patents – Inventions and innovations
- Copyright – Artistic, literary, or musical works
- Industrial Designs – Appearance of products
Conduct a Search
Check if your IP is already registered:
- Use the JIPO online database or visit the Jamaica Intellectual Property Office (JIPO) to perform a search.
Prepare Your Application
Gather the required documents:
- Completed application form
- Description or representation of the IP
- Proof of payment of fees
Submit Your Application
Apply online at www.jipo.gov.jm or submit in person at the JIPO office.
Publication and Opposition
Some IP (like trademarks and patents) are published for public review. Others may oppose your application within a set period.
Registration and Certification
Once approved, you’ll receive a certificate confirming your IP rights.
